POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Flow Cytometry Core Facility is a shared resource laboratory serving a large number of the research laboratories on the campus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The facility houses and operates a large collection of advanced instruments for analytical flow cytometry and fluorescence activated cell sorting. Currently, the laboratory is staffed by two full time faculty and one senior technician who carry out supervision and training of a user base consisting of >600 scientists, and assist the facility clients by carrying out procedures such as high speed cell sorting, experimental design, data analysis.

The technician who we are recruiting to join the staff will assist in many aspects of the routine operation of the core laboratory. In addition to maintaining and supervising the use of multiple flow cytometers and other associated equipment, the technician will assist with ordering and stocking supplies for the laboratory, keeping equipment service logs up to date and in the generation of monthly billing reports.

The person will:

  • Perform a moderate number of simple or moderate technical procedures;
  • Require occasional guidance;
  • Occasionally be responsible for ordering routine supplies;
  • Rarely modify technical procedures;
  • Rarely train other lab members;
  • Rarely guide other lab members;
  • A simple / limited understanding of scientific literature and the research goals and rationale is required;
  • Occasionally analyze data;
  • Rarely interpret data;
  • Rarely make written contributions to papers and grant proposals.*

QUALIFICATIONS

Lab bench experience is required, preferably amounting to at least 6 months of experience working in an advanced research laboratory setting (e.g., university or medical center laboratory, or industry). Must be familiar with basic procedures involved in handling chemicals and standard lab equipment. Experience with sterile mammalian cell culture highly desirable. Knowledge of basic immunology and flow cytometry desirable. Although not absolutely required, candidates with previous hands on experience with flow cytometers will be given preference.

Education: B.A. or B.S.

Training: Laboratory courses in biology or chemistry or biochemistry/molecular biology.
